A series of photographs made in a small village deep in the rural area of Russia. In earlier times there was a sawing mill in the village. Now the mill is closed. The population of once over 5000 people nowadays counts only 900.
The circumstances of life in this village are very basic. There is no running water in each house, and there are no paved roads.
Most common means of transport are useless. Especially after rainfall you cannot reach the village in an ordinary car.
Therefore the preferred means of transport is a motorcycle with sidecar.
The villagers use it to transport everything: goods, animals, people and anything else you can think of.
Often they have replaced the original sidecar by a wooden box, creating more loading space.
The villagers are quite proud of their motorcycles and love to show them and have taken pictures of them.
Most of the motorcycles are old and repaired many times. Often a motorcycle is assembled from parts of several others.
The oldest portrayed motorcycle is built in 1949, and has almost the same age as its owner.
